Someone Else’s Wedding by Tamar Cohen

Someone Else's Wedding

“Mr. & Mrs. Max Irving request the company of:

Mrs. Fran Friedman, mourning her empty nest, her lost baby, the galloping years, and a disastrous haircut.

Mr. Saul Friedman, runner of marathons, avoider of conflicts and increasingly distant husband.

The two Misses Friedman, Pip and Katy, one pining over the man she can’t have, the other trying to shake off the man she no longer wants.

At the marriage of their son James Irving, forbidden object of inappropriate and troubling desire.

For thirty-six hours of secrets and lies, painted-on-smiles and potential ruin. And drinks, plenty of drinks.

There’s nothing like a wedding for stirring up the past. As Fran negotiates her way from Saturday morning to Sunday evening she is forced to confront things she’s long thought buried, sending shockwaves through her family, and to make decisions about the future that will have far-reaching consequences for them all.”

MY REVIEW

A fat * * * * from me!

Someone Else’s Wedding is an enjoyable read that takes place over two days at a wedding.

Tamar Cohen brilliantly draws the reader in and cleverly presents us with some surprising twists as we read on. The characters are plenty and varied but written in well so we’re not overwhelmed with information.

Having read Tamar’s fantastic “War of the Wives” previously, this author is definately one I will eagerly watch out for.

An engaging, enjoyable read.

This Child of Mine by Sinead Moriarty

This Child of Mine

“Sinéad Moriarty’s breathtaking eighth novel, This Child of Mine, is the story of two daughters, two mothers and the extraordinary bond of motherly love. It’s a unique blend of the storytelling genius of Jodi Picoult and the compassion and humour of Marian Keyes, in a complex and deeply involving story that will have readers arguing about the nature of motherhood and the rights and wrongs of the characters’ actions.

Sophie is a happy 18-year-old living in London with Anna, her Irish mother. Anna has devoted her life to Sophie. It may be just the two of them but Anna has more than enough love to give. Sophie has everything she could ever need.

Laura is a not-so-happy artist. She too has a daughter, Mandy. But Laura is haunted by the loss of her first child, Jody. Happy-go-lucky as she is, Mandy lives in Jody’s shadow and wonders why her mother can never let go.

Both mothers carry secrets and cannot forget the day their paths crossed. But a chance discovery is about to bring everything into the open and mothers and daughters, love and lies, past and future, will spectacularly collide.”

MY REVIEW:

I rate * * * * stars to This Child of Mine.

Thank you to Penguin Books  for sending me a paperback copy in return for an honest review.

Wow. What an emotional and compelling read we get from Sinead Moriarty with This Child of Mine!

I was hooked from the very beginning and felt myself changing my mind about who I felt for throughout the book. It seemed that I should have disliked both mothers, but I couldn’t, I empathised with each and felt they had both suffered greatly for such vastly different past experiences. But I really wanted both to be righted for their past wrongs.

The writing flows effortlessly and the characters are so realistic and very raw – but for good reason. The past choices made by the characters are very dark and so emotionally devastating – yet this is in no way a depressing read. Add some great supporting characters that contribute wonderfully to the depth of the story and are either realistically lovely (Lexie!) or intensely annoying (Joan) in their own unique way! Sinead has balanced the strength of emotion alongside lots of wit and warmth and created an unforgettable read.

Moriarty left me questioning the morals and the differing perspectives of each and every one of us. It also makes the reader realise how one rash decision made a long time ago can alter life so dramatically, so many years later.

I love a book that when I’ve finished, I think about for a long time afterwards – This Child of Mine left me very pensive and I even discussed the ‘what if’ issue with my husband – I needed to hear someone else’s opinion as mine was so changeable with each page turned!

Overall, a gripping, intense read that sets off a roller coaster of emotions throughout. This Child of Mine will pull you in and not let you go until the every last page! Fantastic.

Me & Mr Carrington by Alexandra Brown

me and mr carrington

“A short story from the author of Cupcakes at Carrington’s – and a prequel to Christmas at Carrington’s!

Georgie Hart can’t believe her luck. It looks like Tom, the hunky boss of Carrington’s Department Store, in the picture-postcard town of Mulberry-on-Sea, is as hot for her as she is for him. After a romantic Italian get-together leaves her on Cloud Nine, Georgie is brought back down to earth with a bump when she has to get back behind the counter of the Luxury Handbags section.

But when Georgie is left open-mouthed by a revelation from one of her well-heeled customers, it seems like Tom hasn’t been entirely honest with her. Has Georgie done her usual trick of adding two and two together to make five?

Ever wondered what happened when Georgie first got together with Mr Carrington himself? This deliciously funny short story is perfect for anyone who loved Cupcakes at Carrington’s, and for those discovering the lovable Georgie Hart for the first time. The story also features an exclusive peek at the next book, Christmas at Carrington’s.”

MY REVIEW:

I rate Me & Mr Carrington * * * * stars.

Me & Mr Carrington is a wonderful refresher for fans of Cupcakes at Carrington’s and a warm up to the next instalment, Christmas at Carrington’s..!

Cupcakes at Carringtons by Alexandra Brown

cupcakes at carringtons

“Georgie Hart loves her job – running the luxury handbag concession at Carrington’s Department store in the pretty seaside town of Mulberry-On-Sea, and treating herself (once too often!) to a red velvet cupcake with buttercream icing in Carrington’s café.

But Georgie is thrown into disarray when Carrington’s is plunged into a recession-busting makeover, cueing the arrival of femme fatale Maxine, who wields the axe in her immaculately-manicured hands.

It spells a recipe for disaster for Georgie and soon she is fighting not only for her job, but also for the attentions of her gorgeous boss, James. And when hot newcomer Tom arrives, who may or may not be the best thing since sliced bread, Georgie must decide where her loyalties really lie…”

MY REVIEW:

I give Cupcakes at Carringtons * * * * stars.

I found Cupcakes to be a fantastic, immensely enjoyable read. Such a fabulous debut for Alexandra, surely she must be in reality, Georgie herself?!

This book is set in Carrington’s, the high quality Department Store where the main character Georgie has worked for years.  Georgie loves her job running the luxury handbag concession in Carrington’s, where her gay best friend Eddie and her best friend Sam also work. Sam runs the Carrinton’s Cafe, where Georgie & the staff  spend an awful lot of time discussing events and eating deliciously tempting cupcakes! It truly feels like the hub of Carrington’s, and gossip central for the staff.

Carrington’s is very special to Georgie – she was brought up  with memories of visiting regularly with her late mother and in the present day, it’s her home from home with her best friends and the daily gossip that surround the store. It’s these strong bonds that keep the story flowing and the reader hooked.

You find many twists and turns for the various characters through the book, each one interesting, captivating and leaving you gasping for more as every page turns! As in reality, we don’t like every one we meet… but so descriptive is Alexandra’s prose that love them or hate them, we want to live in their world and we are addicted to finding out their fate. We are also left feeling slightly envious of Georgie’s choice of delectable men, Tom and James – all I can voice about those two is ‘Yuummm…’  😉

The writing transports you into the store with it’s glamour, luxury goods and exotic fragrances – along with the need to munch sweet, scrumptious cupcakes of course!

Overall a witty, vibrant, laugh out loud gem of a debut from Alexandra Brown and it doesn’t end here! Brown has already released a shot story follow up called Me & Mr Carrington which is a prequel to Christmas at Carrington’s! So if you loved Cupcakes, you can be transported to Carrington’s again and again!
